This last weekend we received some snow where I live. It seemed a good opportunity to add another post about snow as an object lesson of God’s character. Through His creation, God gives us a tiny glimpse of who He is. As I have mentioned before, snow is a beautiful reminder of God’s forgiveness and God’s grace. I would also like to look at the fact that snow is a reminder of God’s infinite power and love.
Each Snowflake is Unique
One thing I marvel at is that no two snowflakes are the same. In all the years that scientists have studied snowflakes, they have not found any two alike. Imagine walking outside as snow flurries to the ground on a still day. As you look into the sky, what do you see? There is no way you could count the snowflakes within your visibility range. Millions could be falling around you. A snow storm could last for several hours and cover many miles. Yet, each of the six-sided, microscopic beauties that fall are individually distinct from one another. Let’s go a little deeper. How many times does it normally snow a year? In the cool weather regions, it is not uncommon to get several snowfalls a year in the same place. What about nationally or globally? In a single year, an uncountable number of unique snowflakes fall. This has been happening all the years you have been alive and for thousands of years before that. God’s amazing, infinite creativity designed each of these little snowflakes distinctly different from each other.
God is in Control
These little snowflakes can remind us of how big God is. He governs the “storehouses of snow” (Job 38:22). Psalm 103:19 says, “The Lord has established His throne in the heavens, And His sovereignty rules over all” (NASB). Yet, God is not just sitting enthroned in heaven indifferent to what happens on this earth. He cares about each person. He wants to have a personal relationship with each person. He desires all men to be saved (2 Peter 3:9), and to “grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ” (2 Peter 3:18). First Chronicles 29:11 speaks of the scope of God’s authority: “Yours, O Lord, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, indeed everything that is in the heavens and the earth; Yours is the dominion, O Lord, and You exalt Yourself as head over all” (NASB). However, on a personal level, God also gives direction to His people. “The mind of man plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps” (Proverbs 16:9, NASB).
If He can make and control trillions of snowflakes, is He not wise and trustworthy enough to be entrusted with our daily lives?
