After coming into the house they saw the Child with Mary His mother; and they fell to the ground and worshiped Him. Then, opening their treasures, they presented to Him gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. ~Matthew 2:11
“Aw, what an adorable baby!” Such a phrase is not uncommonly said concerning many babies-especially from women. What is it about a squirming, helpless bundle of humanity that we see as attractive or cute? What do we mean by the word adorable?
The word adorable has changed a little over the years. Miriam-webster.com defines it in the following two ways: “1. extremely charming or appealing” and “2. worthy of adoration or veneration.” The word adoration actually comes from the Latin “adōrābilis, literally meaning capable or worthy of veneration or worship.
As we approach Christmas this year, one thought that I have pondered is the adoration of Jesus’ birth. The shepherds, Simeon, Anna, and the wisemen all adored Jesus not as one would adore a cute baby, but for who He is: God Himself and the Savior of the world.
This little baby, Jesus, who was born in Bethlehem many years ago, is God Himself who had no beginning and will have no end. This baby was the One who had created the entire world with perfection, and in humility chose to step into His creation, taking on the form of a man and experiencing all the side-effects of a sinful creation because of Adam’s sin. God Himself, became a man, and took upon Himself the form of a servant. Jesus’ humility that is seen in His birth was culminated in His suffering and death on the cross. He, the sinless God, bore the sin of mankind. Three days later, rose again because He is God. He alone is worthy of our adoration and praise!
This year in the midst of all the activity and bustle, take a few moments to reflect on God Himself, coming as baby and worship and adore Him. As the popular Christmas carol says:
O come, all ye faithful,
Joyful and triumphant!
O come ye, O come ye to Bethlehem;
Come and behold him
Born the King of Angels:
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
O come, let us adore Him,
Christ the Lord.
